Medicare Supplement (MS) Insurance (also called Medigap)

Medicare Supplement Insurance, helps cover the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare doesn’t — like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. These plans are offered by private insurers and come in standardized types labeled A through N, each offering different levels of coverage. Some plans even include extras, like foreign travel emergency care.

MS or Medigap does not cover prescription drugs, so many people pair it with a standalone Part D plan. Premiums vary by plan, insurer, and location, typically ranging from $50 to $300+ per month. Unlike Medicare Advantage, Medigap works with Original Medicare, letting you see any provider that accepts Medicare, giving you flexibility and peace of mind.

Understanding Medicare Supplement

  • Medicare Supplement (Medigap) helps pay for out-of-pocket expenses that Original Medicare doesn't cover, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

  • Medigap plans are designed to work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B), allowing you to keep your Medicare benefits while reducing additional healthcare costs.

  • Medigap plans are standardized by the federal government, with 10 plan options (A through N) offering varying levels of coverage, but the coverage is the same no matter which insurer offers the plan.

  • Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage, so beneficiaries typically need a separate Part D plan for medication coverage.
